1.      Emotional distance and withdrawal

A person with depression may isolate themselves, making family and friend’s feel shut out.

It’s not personal; depression creates a sense of disconnection and exhaustion.

How to support:

Let them know you’re there, even if they don’t respond.

Offer low-pressure ways to stay connected, like sitting quietly together.

2.      Communication breakdowns:

Depression can make expressing thoughts and emotions difficult.

Friends and family may misinterpret silence or short responses as rudeness.

How to support:

Be patient and avoid pushing for conversations.

Use open-ended, non-judgmental questions like, ‘ How can we support you today’?

3.      Increased irritability and conflict

Depression can make someone more sensitive, defensive or irritable.

Small disagreements may feel overwhelming, leading to unnecessary arguments.

How to support:

Recognize that mood changes are part of the illness, not a reflection of your relationship.

Set healthy boundaries while showing empathy.

4.      Changes in responsibilities and roles

Family members may take on extra responsibilities when their loved one is struggling.

This can lead to feelings of stress, resentment or guilt.

How to support:

Encourage small steps toward routine without overwhelming them.

Seek balance, support them, but don’t neglect your own needs.

5.      Feeling unappreciated or unseen

Depression can make it hard for someone to express gratitude or affection.

Friends and family may feel like their efforts go unnoticed.

How to support:

Understand that depression dims emotions; their love for you is still there.

Look for small signs of appreciation – sometimes; just staying present is their way of saying ‘thank you’.

Supporting a loved one with depression isn’t always easy, but your presence matters more than you realize.  Relationships may feel strained, but patience, empathy and understanding can help bridge the gap.

Depression changes relationships, but love and patience can keep them strong.
